SUBSCRIBE for More Theories! ► bit.ly/1qV8fd6
Lately, gamers have been up in arms about whether or not all games should have an Easy Mode. Fans of games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Dark Souls argue that the hard mode aspect of the game is part of the experience and doesn't need an easy mode. Others think games should be accessible to all gamers, no matter their skill level. Well Loyal Theorists, I'm here to tell you that Game Developers have been WAY ahead of you all for a while. You see, YOU are not actually choosing your difficulty setting - THEY ARE! That's right, all your games have been lying to you this whole time and I've got the proof!

Some games for example mario kart if you play against bots and are too far ahead of them they speed up to an impossible speed while not seeming like it on the map untill you are losing or it catches up to you
To be god at games first I take 4 redbull and I can play at eny dificulti and im to poor to play games but thenks Mat you are the best fack you people in the coments I play solitare this the onli game I play Im not american .
Hey I beat Titanfall 2 on hard
playing through dark souls series has actually made me a better gamer in general. i can crush through other games nowadays easily
I'm studying Game Design and I can confirm this is real for at least every AAA game. Maybe the Indie Games are out of this, but every popular game has this, if not the health is the enemy debuff, if it's not that it's another thing, etc. The fact is that you want players to play your game and feel strong while playing it, you want the game to be a good experience, not a frustrating one. I actually do not mind this, I mean, I play to feel an adventure, not to feel I'm the very best as no one ever was, and I actually tend to change the difficulty based on how good/bad I'm doing.
Monster hunter games train the player to become good by escalating the difficulty level. Each new monster added a new body language and tells to learn because there is no life bar. At the end of the day the grind feels fun playing with friends, even helping new players is great.
There is nothing better then failing in games. Quit assassins creed 4 half way through cuz it got boring that you can block anything and stealth was easy af. Only cool part where the legendary ships wich wasted me like 100 times.
Multiplayer games tho
Pls use the space bar!
I stabbed 2 max netherite players in minecraft with me having max netherite and also killed 2 different hackers also me after this video I've won but at what cost
I think the answer is simply that not all games need to be designed with the same difficulty settings. Its ok that some games are geared towards children and are mind-numbingly easy for adults, its also ok that the Souls games are very difficult. That variety means everyone gets an experience they want, they just simply need to find the right game. Demanding a developer do what you personally want when there are millions of other players already enjoying this hand-crafted experience is just selfish.
To be fair, there's something poetic about Bioshock in particular manipulating you without you realizing it.
If we want to have fun, but aren't experienced enough to play on normal or hard, they should be able to get the entertainment that we paid 20 TO 60 DOLLARS TO PLAY!
Git Gud is the worst argument you could make for this because it 1: Can be applied to literally anything, and 2: Doesn't explain or mean anything at all.
The cake is a lie
honestly now that i'm an adult i just play on whichever difficulty i enjoy the most. if a game is notoriously difficult without any way to make it easier i just wont waste my money on something not for me
Me from the future, and this topic is more relevant today thanks to Activision. Apparently Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War actively nerfs and bluffs players according to their performance (the better you do, the worse you can play, with slower movement, increased recoil, etc). Now you can say that this is ok in single player games like you mentioned here is ok since it doesn't nerf or buff the player, it just changes the environment. But COD making it harder for good players is not ok, and it's making it hard to have fun in cod anymore. Same reason why sbmm hurts (if u can do a theory on sbmm3 that'd be cool)
man now i want to play a game that is so hard no one beat it ever so i can become better
That was so cringy oh my God when he shows himself like actually showed himself it was so weird
Now Call of duty Has something called skill based matchmaking and that is meant to keep players thinking they are good in a multiplayer match while ruining the experience.
Very interesting video, but this doesn’t change anything about Sekiro or other Fromsoft games. Fans like them, at least partially (big part) because they don’t hold your hand at all. People who want an easier game can just play something else, or watch a playthrough online.
Seems I arrived a bit late to this video, which was the controversy with Sekiro?
Fun fact, thanks to DDA, some speedrun strategy involve killing oneself to make it easier and faster to proceed
The fact that this point about DDA is mixed with the Fromsoft stuff is extremely misleading. It makes it seem like this is undermining the point that 'fromsoft games are designed not to give you a break - an easy mode would disrupt the original vision' - but provides no evidence that DDA exists in fromsoft games.
Bro the 2016 gt was so good. But this is better
Man, the team’s editing skills really downgraded he went to full on animation to a cardboard cutout.
The kid who plays Minecraft: huh, yea right... *jojo music starts playing*
My first round of fortnite I flew directly into a haybail and was stuck for the whole time
You are not as good as you think you are Online mp players pros:i feel offended
Please make a theory about Animal Jam
It would be ok to let us pick IF they let us actually pick. I really really really don't want difficulty ajdusment when I struggle in a bit and it's obviously unhealthy for game designers to rely on it. Any level should be intrinsically balanced and not need auto corrections. That being said in cased of rushed developments that are short on playtesting I guess it's better to have it than not.
Die to a mine in almost any fallout game, it's not there when you respawn. Didn't realize it until now, artificially easy :(
Games should have easy modes for newcomers
I'm a simple man,i see DAD OF BOI in thumbnail,i click
I like this style of editing
Wow
Honestly am I a pro at games. NO. GOD NO. But my motivation in a grueling challenge made to make you want to break the device you are playing on is “ just try it as hard as you can over and over until you succeed “ that was my artificial dopamine during my like 100 attempts at nightmare king Grimm . What I said for my fight on supreme calamitous an boss rush in the calamity mod. So I stand strong on that saying that I made and I think it’ll be good if others do it as well
This is true only for home console games. Arcades are completely opposite! They are harder on purpose to eat more quarters!!!
We all know a game developer who didn't lie to us Bennet Foddy
Plus Persona 5’s “hardest” difficult is the easiest
when you read the thumbnail, did you hear the heavy from tf2? just me.....
Matpat: your not as good at games as you think you are ... it's a fact! Cookiezie: am I joke to you
Doom Eternal Ultra Nightmare is interesting
I actually watched a talk about gameplay programming this year where they mentioned that in some FPSes, there would he a curve dor how much damage a player takes, with the first few hits doing the least, giving the player time to react. this curve can change between difficulties, but not that much
Dark souls rules!
I didn’t need to be told I was bad at games
nah no worries there, aint got the machine to handle the games coming out anyways
So, MatPat got himself a green screen.
When he siad welcome to 2019 I understood this wasn't 2020 or 2021 it was 2019
Minecraft doesn't do this If u die it doesnt get easier
Have you beaten minecraft hardcore I didnt
I always play easy mode bc im a coward
Games like sekiro and soulsborne aren’t hard. Once you actually learn how the mechanics work etc the game gets fun. Sure you’ll die, but then you’ll figure out how stuff works and then continue on.
I play normal mode
I heard this from a video about dark souls difficulty, the guy said that the reason we really care about dark souls difficulty even though games in the past have been maybe even harder is because we were conditioned with casual gaming during the 7th generation with the wii and Xbox Kinect and the swarm of let’s say easier to pick up games like call of duty and now there has been a resurgence in more mainstream hard games
Me when I saw matpat not using his normal avatar: pardon me nani
What* baffles me is that player think they know what they need. The majority of them don't, hence why they aren't devs.
in assassins creed odyssey i got a upgrade where dont take fall damage but just randomly i dint unlock it
Okay but I never die so you're wrong
Games need to be calming rather than being hard
Truth be told, difficulty is objective. For some types of games different options of difficulty works really well. For games like Sekiro, Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne... an easier mode would ruin the game's feel. Part of the fun in these games is feeling the adrenalin rush and that sweetly earned feeling of victory after a tough boss. People would give those kinds of games a lesser score than they deserve becaused they played on an easier difficulty and missed out on these crucial feelings. If I wanted to play something particularly calming I would play something else. If somebody doesn't like these kinds of games, no issue either. So in my opinion, difficulty options shouldn't be in every game nor should all games be calming. I do however believe that most games would hugely benefit from more accessibility options like colorblind modes, remapable controls, etc... so more people can enjoy these games.
Indeed there is nothing wrong with 0laying easy and they do actually change
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, it is wrong to pressure a dev to add easier difficulty options in a game were it doesn't really have a place. Games like Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne partially are great because they are challenging yet fair. They wouldn't mix well with an easy difficulty. The reason these game journalists pressure games to have an easy mode is because a lot of them don't really review games properly, but rather rush through bits of it on the easiest difficulty (not all of them do this, of course). I would rather have them add more accesibility options like remappable controls and colorblind modes for people who otherwise can't play these games.
This had nothing to do with Sekiro. Misleading title.
I noticed Mario party “hard” mode is easier that normal mode
I want to use this. Dynamic difficulty adjustment for my own games in the future
That gears of war thing is interesting since ever since chapter 2, Fortnite will have you play your first match against only bots to calibrate your skill. And based on your performance in each previous game, they replace more or less players with bots and tune their I accordingly
Skill based matchmaking for single player games 😶
Who also thinks that bloodborne is the hardest in the souls games
It totally depends on how experienced you are in each of them. I played bloodborne (my first soulsborne) for over 10 playthroughs and by this point I would consider it the easiest for me personally. I have beaten all the bloodborne bosses at least once solo and on the first try (not specificially in the same playthroughs), except for the Abhorrent beast, headless bloodletting beast and Queen Yharnam (mainly because I haven't fought these a lot). I found Sekiro the most difficult because I had to unlearn some habits from the other games. I believe it has the steepest learning curve, but not the highest difficulty roof so to speak.
So I’m assuming DDA isn’t in insane trilogy
When ur watching titanic: “he’s a time traveler “
Studio that created Unreal Tournament... better known as "fortnite guys"
The only 2 things that I have found too hard so far (I've only just beaten the 3rd boss) are all the gunners in the sunken valley and the swordsmen area you have to go through before the 3rd boss, the swordsmen there are easy enough to kill but when their is 2 of them it's just not possible for me
But players choose to play those games regardless easy normal or hard difficulty. None is forcing them. Apart from 🎮 aftereffect everything else is selfinflicted cause playing those games skips sport activities, healthy lifestyle etc. and in the end players end up in keyboard warriors and then wonder about cause&effect. But definition of "loser" and "winner" vary. 👽🥋
There's no need to choose between healthy lifestyle and gaming. You can do both. I simply replace the time average people would spend watching tv with gaming, there's plenty of time left for other activities, you just need to plan a little. If gaming actually starts becoming an issue on your health you probably should make drastic changes in your lifestlye. If you would take the games from gaming-addicted people they would probably end up watching tv or using their phone all the time if their mentality doesn't change.
This is why I prefer to play pvp games. You either live or die and losing for many in a row games is normal.
Only this guy make me happy when he ruins games and movies
That is not how you use a pipe wrench.
I support easy mode so that new gamers can learn and progress onto harder difficulties and anyway gaming shouldn't be about who is better than who, gaming is about having fun and not being competitive
The first time I realised this was happening in games was when i noticed rubber banding in Need for Speed Most Wanted. You could EASILY overtake the AI but they'd always be right behind!!
Nice theory, less so of a fact: If u finish the game from the first try without dying once, then you did actually play it on hard mode and nothing was changed/made easy for you. Surely it's rare to happen, but it beats the theory
Only time I'm gonna tryhard and focus in a videogame is if i'm playing Multiplayer, when it comes to a storymode I feel like relaxing, not quitting the game cause i can't beat a boss.
I often like a challenge if it's designed well. I never got frustrated of dying over and over to Slave Knight Gael in Dark Souls 3, or Ludwig the holy blade and Lady Maria in Bloodborne. I just got happy I got even another shot at trying these well designed battles that almost feel like a dance. Bosses like the Bed of Chaos in Dark Souls 1 are the opposite of a fun challenge and feel like a chore to do. If I get frustrated at such a boss I quit knowing full well that I will probably beat it the next day on my second try or so.
I would want a chicken hat and play hard mode
Isn't this a game fact
When your day job is really stressful, you don't always want an angina-inducing games session. But you probably do want the content.
What is when the difficulty is part of the story like dark souls.
literally this. i put the game on easy so i can beat it as quickly as possible. i think Wolfenstein i turned it up because it was too easy but in general i'm trynna get the story and then move on
These vid are great for people who looking to get rid of their gaming addictions !! Thanks Dr.Patt, thank you so much for just a theory now and then
Doom Eternal...
Me who realized this mechanic due to playing on different devices : *it now has a name* also MatPat, I now bequeath to thee the new label of Poet :^
*rings demon bell* (Sorry if I got the name wrong I haven't played sekiro in awhile)
Sekiro has a mechanic that when you fight a boss it literally cannot one-shot you. I played the game without upgrading my health at all (and succeeded) and the final boss cannot one-shot you, although he does more damage than the amount of health you have. I can't help, but appreciate the game for it.
"How my blood boils, face me Sekiro!" yeah, bring it old ma... BANG (gets shot by gun several times in a row.) Of all the games I played, Isshin The Sword Saint was the most difficult boss, tied together probably with Darkeater Midir.
Play normal mode, it increases difficulty if you are doing very well, the reduction is only temporary, it goes back up depending if the player got better, look at it this way if you get kill then the reduction is a form of penalty, and either way, is still practice anyway, the game is just simply helping you adjust.
This is a controversy? lol respect players with easy mode?? How about you get good or get rekt? XDD
The cutest he’s looked
why would matpat do this. He know what will happen this the haters
the hardest is dark sould in online multiplayer
I always look for the hard mode. post human warrior on crysis, 00 agent in 007 golden eye. i love it. I know fortnite will totally give you 99 bots to play when youre first starting out giving you the feeling you totally have some skills against people until a few matches later you get slaughtered till you start improving. i myself was wondering why i made 20 kills in my first go around, and why no one had aim lol.
0:13 wait
I remember playing Twisted Metal 2 so much with my siblings, until the disc suddenly stopped working for us. Rip lol
A lot of multiplayer games will also contain bots in your first games as well.
i might be weird but i think this is a pretty good way to design games.
I knew it was bad at games because I suck at them but Jesus my lord I’m horrible at games
